Every Thursday needs a good throwback, so now that the dust has settled, we’re throwin’ it back to our voyage to South by Southwest 2018.
Held in our very own backyard of Austin, Texas, the four-day, city-wide celebration of music, art, creativity, and community is an experience that should not be missed out on. So, when our friends at STAG Provisions invited us to join in on the fun with them this year, we couldn’t have booked our Airbnb fast enough.
200 miles and a pit stop at Buc-ee’s later, the Jack Mason team arrived in Austin, airstream in tow. After crawling our way through traffic, we set up shop outside of STAG, located in the ever-bustling area of South Congress. The Jack Mason team, always up for an adventure, decided to leave the itinerary behind this year. No guide, no plan – just a true South-by experience full of exploration and discovery.
After a stop at Guero’s for tacos and margs (we are in Texas, after all), we wandered about the city, stopping into one of our favorite venues, Hotel San Jose, to check out the lineup of artists they were hosting for this year’s festivities. During the festival’s past, we visited numerous venues, but there were some that we found ourselves always drifting back to. Hotel San Jose was one of those. Hosting its own lineup of performances on their makeshift stage throughout the weekend, “South by San Jose” never failed us. From small local acts to bigger names like Albert Hammond Jr., lead guitarist for The Strokes, every performance had the crowd grooving (even Craig!).
Over the next few days, we visited Austin staples like Jo’s Coffee shop, saw dozens of performances and did a lot of world-class people watching. Keep Austin Weird, right? We met up with a lot of old friends and made many new ones, too. With a lot of watches sold and our waistbands a little tighter, we packed up the airstream and headed back to Dallas. With another SXSW successfully in the books for team Jack Mason, we find ourselves already itching to make plans for next year. Will we see you there?
